People spend most of their working lives at work, and Philiy Lander thinks that “It really shouldn’t suck.” As an Agile coach, she dedicates her life energy to making the work place a better place. Two ways she does that are simple yet poorly practiced in today’s busy world: asking questions and actually listening to people.
Lander shares her growth through the TenWomenStrong program, in particular she has been striving to be clear about her boundaries. She shares a story of working with a very difficult leader that helped her stretch grow in terms of emotional intelligence and self-awareness.
Philiy Lander’s Words of Wisdom:

The true strength of a leader is being unapologetically “you.”

Imposter Syndrome and Finding One’s Authentic Self - Billie Schuttpelz | 1911
Wednesday Oct 02, 2019
Wednesday Oct 02, 2019
Billie Schuttpelz is an Agile coach at Accenture | SolutionsIQ who is known for her work on conquering Imposter Syndrome, something she has struggled with. A stage actor and advocate for therapy and visualization, Schuttpelz invented an alternate reality called “Oops Land” where people have the safety and permission to fail and also to be their authentic selves. This is in stark contrast where she often she feels she lives: in Perfect Island.
Schuttpelz personal development journey has helped her take back power over her own life, which has sometimes felt lacking purpose. She shares stories of her Imposter Syndrome workshops, as well as her process going through the Shine program fromTenWomenStrong, and the Organization and Relationship Systems Coaching (ORSC) program.
Billie’s Words of Wisdom:
“What if instead of finding my purpose, I find myself... It leads me to fulfilling my purpose?”
“People are the most innovative when they’re operating in their authentic voice... We shouldn’t focus so much on innovation. We should focus on getting our people to their authentic selves, and the innovation will come out naturally.”

Ellen Gottesdiener, a product coach, author, and CEO of EBG Consulting, shares her wisdom about marrying product management with Agile principles and practices. She speculates a future where there will be a “blending of disciplines where you don’t necessarily have a business area and a technology area”, just one product team with interdisciplinary team members. Her piece of advice to product people: Have strategic awareness of your product in the marketplace or “big view”, and get rid of junk in the backlog.
Gottesdiener also takes us down the memory lane to the beginnings of the Agile Conference – she has attended every one of them since Salt Lake City. She reminds us of the women who have had a large impact on the Agile community from the very beginning.

How to Make Room for the Things That Matter - Emma McGuigan | 1908
Wednesday Sep 11, 2019
Wednesday Sep 11, 2019
Emma McGuigan dreams of a world where there’s no need for women’s groups because society has changed to the point where equality is a real thing. “I realize it’s a little naïve of me to make a bold statement like that,” she says, “but if we don’t make the bold statements, we’re never going to get there.”
Today, as Senior Managing Director for Accenture Microsoft Business Group and a champion for human rights advocacy and female empowerment, McGuigan is bold in her work with the Stemettes and the Orchid Project, both organizations working to improve the lives of women and girls around the world. In this episode, she offers much advice to listeners on everything from how to show up for conversations and really make a contribution, to how body language impacts our efficacy.
Emma McGuigan’s Words of Wisdom:
“There’s a power in listening. Have the courage to have a conversation. Bring that human side of you to bear because that’s when we’re at our best.”

Five Characteristics of a Playful Leader - Portia Tung | 1906
Wednesday Aug 28, 2019
Wednesday Aug 28, 2019
When we think of “play,” we think of chaotic children running through the streets creating imaginary scenarios and making up ridiculous rules. However, play is not a frivolous activity that us grown adults need to abandon. Instead, Portia Tung says play is essential to the development and enrichment of both children and adults’ lives.
As an executive Agile coach and play researcher, Tung has been dedicated to promoting happier adulthood through lifelong play and founded the School of Play. After her research of thousands of children and adults at play, Tung has uncovered five characteristics of a playful leader, whom she calls “playmakers”:
Respectful
Resourceful
Responsible
Resilient
Real
Portia Tung’s words of wisdom: “We can’t give what we don’t have”

From Stepping Back to Leaning In - Deatrice Gautreaux | 1905
Wednesday Aug 21, 2019
Wednesday Aug 21, 2019
Deatrice Gautreaux is an Agile coach at Accenture | SolutionsIQ and a champion for the Women in Agile movement. Being part of any women’s movement is a tremendous change for her. “As a young black girl raised in the south, segregation was a painful thing…” So Gautreaux made the intentional choice not to separate herself from the whole: “When it came to women movements, I took a step back.”
After an eye-opening experience at Accenture | SolutionsIQ’s annual employee gathering, Gautreaux was able to create for herself a new, empowering story about participating in the Women in Agile movement. She shares how the fabulous Lyssa Adkins gave her some advice for finding the confidence to lead life on purpose and the self-worth that she always had in herself since she was a child.
Deatrice Gautreaux’s words of wisdom:
“Rather than sit on the outside and be a spectator to your own story, own it, lean into it, embrace it and enjoy it.”
